Sa Torre: A Historical Property that Birthed Bodegas Bordoy
Sa Torre, a property that dates back to 1369, is a well-known landmark on the island. Its impressive neo-Gothic chapel, overlooking the fields between Llucmajor and Cap Blanc, is a testament to the property's rich history.
Legend has it that the landowner commissioned the chapel to be built as a sign of gratitude for the birth of his long-awaited son. Today, the chapel watches over the vineyards of Bodegas Bordoy, a winery that owes its existence to the vision of Miquel Sastre Bordoy.
Miquel purchased the plots of land known as "Els camps de Sa Vinya" and "S'Aujub Vermell" from the "Sa Torre" estate, with the idea of restoring the vineyards that had once thrived there. His determination, expertise, and foresight made Bodegas Bordoy a reality.
Bodegas Bordoy boasts an impressive wine warehouse built into a hill surrounded by pine trees. The area's unique soil compositions, due to its proximity to the sea just 5km away, provide an interesting variety of growing conditions.
The winemaker at Bodegas Bordoy notes that the arid climate, with low rainfall and intense sunlight, results in lower yields but higher-quality grapes.
The winery encompasses 20.6 hectares, with thirteen plots of land growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Callet (a local red variety), Prensal Blanc, and Giro Ros grapes. Additionally, they experiment with other grape varieties, such as Gorgollassa, as part of their commitment to local varieties.
Visitors can take a tour of the vineyards and winery, and even use the space for various events.
Bodegas Bordoy is a testament to the power of passion and expertise in creating something special.
